Newton's three laws of motion!

The science that we have been covering week by week so far can all be explained by Newton's three laws of motion. So we thought we might add a page here for children and parents to familiarise themselves more.

NEWTON'S FIRST LAW

Newton's first law

An object that is at rest stays at rest. An object in motion stays in motion. Both of these occur UNLESS another force is used on them. Think of the football. It will not move unless something makes it. It would not stop moving if another force did not act upon it. THINK/DISCUSS all of the different forces that could act on this ball.

 

NEWTON'S SECOND LAW

Newton's second law.

The acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the force applied. For instance look at the different rocks above - the greater the mass the more force is needed to move it. The more force applied the greater the acceleration depending on the mass. THINK/DISCUSS the different forces that could act on the rocks.

 

NEWTON'S THIRD LAW

Newton's third law.

For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. Think of bouncing a ball. The ball hits the floor and the floor pushes back making the ball 'bounce' back up. The harder the ball hits the floor the higher it 'bounces' back.

The maths in this video is quite complicated but it is fun and if you listen carefully it explains all of the laws above.  ENJOY!
