 Term 1

Welcome to Year 1! We are very excited for the children to begin their next chapter of learning and to see them grow in confidence and independence throughout the year. This term, the children will be settling into their new routines and developing the skills they need to become confident learners.

Phonics

Phonics will be a big part of our day. The children will continue to develop their knowledge of sounds and practise blending sounds together to read words. They will take part in daily Read Write Inc. sessions, where they will learn new sounds, practise reading words and develop their fluency and comprehension.

Every half term, children will take home a Phonics Challenge. This will include a list of QR codes that you can scan to access short phonics videos at home.

Reading

We will encourage the children to develop a love of reading and enjoy a wide range of stories. Children will bring home books to practise their reading skills, book change is every 3 days. We encourage families to read together regularly. Sharing stories, talking about the pictures and discussing what is happening are all fantastic ways to support your child's reading development.

Maths

In maths, we will begin by developing our understanding of numbers to 10. The children will explore counting, recognising numbers, finding one more and one less, and using number lines and practical resources to support their learning. We will also begin to explore addition and subtraction and develop our understanding of number bonds.

What else will we be learning?

Alongside phonics, reading and maths, the children will enjoy a range of exciting lessons across the curriculum, including English, science, art, design and technology, computing, PE, RE and our foundation subjects. Our PE day is Monday and Wednesday this term. Please ensure your child comes to school ready for PE on this day

Our main focus this term will be helping the children to become confident, independent learners who are ready to take on new challenges. We are looking forward to a fantastic term of learning, exploring and making memories together!

Homework

Reading, reading, reading!  We cannot stress enough, the importance of reading with your child and to your child.  The children will bring home a new book every 3 days and we would love you to explore the book together.  This could be through looking at the pictures, reading the story to them, and allowing them to read the book to you.  Any shared reading you do, please record it in your child's yellow reading record.

Every half term, children will take home a Phonics Challenge. This will include a list of QR codes that you can scan to access short phonics videos at home.
