Term 1
Welcome to Year 5! We hope you had a restful summer break and are looking forward to a busy and exciting year ahead. We are so proud of how the children have settled back into school with enthusiasm, and adapted to their new classes. Year 5 is an important year as the children will develop greater independence, confidence and responsibility.
This term, our whole school theme is “Community”. We began the term thinking about the different communities we are part of, and what it means to belong. Throughout the term, we will be thinking about ways in which we can help our school and local communities. Our English text for the term is the wonderful, magical story “The Hatmakers” by Tamzin Merchant. In maths, we are starting the term by looking at place value, ordering and comparing numbers, before moving on to addition and subtraction. We will be comparing the contrasting locations of Texas and Scotland in geography, and exploring materials and their properties in science. For computing this term, we will be using the program “Tinkercad” to explore 3D modelling. In art, we will be exploring land and city scapes using mixed media. If you were to walk by the year 5 corridors this term you might hear some wonderful music as we are learning to play the recorder!
