Term 1

Welcome to Year 2! We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning, discovery and growth. Our aim is to help every child develop both academically and personally, building the confidence and skills they need to become independent learners.

Throughout the year, we encourage all children to demonstrate our school values of compassion, courage, challenge and curiosity in everything they do. Whether they are working together with friends, tackling a tricky problem, asking thoughtful questions or trying something new, we want our children to approach their learning with a positive and determined attitude.

This term, our learning is centred around our community. Across a range of subjects, children will explore the people, places and services that make our community special. They will develop their understanding of the world around them while making meaningful links between different areas of the curriculum.

As part of our balanced curriculum, we are also placing a strong emphasis on phonics, spelling and Mastering Number. Regular phonics sessions will help children develop their reading and writing skills, while our Mastering Number programme will build fluency, confidence and a deeper understanding of number. These key skills provide the foundations for success across all areas of learning.

We look forward to working together to ensure your child has a happy, successful and rewarding year in Year 2. Thank you for your continued support.

PE Days

PE is on a Monday and a Tuesday. Please ensure your child comes to school ready for PE on this day. Art is on a Tuesday.

Home Learning

Reading at Home

Reading with your child every day is one of the best ways to support their learning and development. Regular reading helps children to build their vocabulary, develop their language skills, improve their understanding of texts and grow their imagination. Most importantly, it helps to foster a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

Even spending a few minutes reading together each evening can have a big impact. Encourage your child to talk about the pictures, discuss unfamiliar words, make predictions and share their ideas about what might happen next. Above all, we want reading to be a positive and enjoyable experience that becomes a valued part of your daily routine.

Our book change day is Friday. Please ensure your child brings their book bag to school so that their books can be exchanged. Children will bring home both a phonics book, which supports the sounds and words they are learning in school, and a reading-for-pleasure book to share and enjoy at home.

Children have also been given a set of orange and red tricky words to practise at home. These are words that cannot always be sounded out using phonics rules, so regular, short bursts of practice will help children to recognise them quickly and confidently, supporting their progress as readers.

Maths

Regular practise on Numberbots will help the children develop their mathematical skills. Logins can be found in the front of their reading records.
